Ten Beaches, Nova Scotia - Scuba Diving
The waters of Ten Beaches, which include the wonderfully sheltered St. Margaret's Bay, are a haven for scuba divers. The area's many inlets and coves are easy to access and feature interesting rock formations and an abundance of marine life, from corals and other marine plants to finfish, shellfish, seals and sometimes even sharks.
For more experienced divers, able to explore depths of up to 170 feet, the wreckage of a sunken submarine lies just off the Peggy's Cove lighthouse, and other ocean wrecks can be explored nearby off Halifax Harbour. Several popular dive sites in the Ten Beaches area are at St. Margaret's Bay, Birchy Head, The Lodge, Fox Point and Hubbards.
The Sea Wolves Dive Club, organized through Torpedo Ray's Scuba, holds its annual Treasure Hunt the second weekend of September each year at Hubbards Beach, drawing more than 200 divers. The club also initiated a new underwater Christmas tree lighting dive in December 2006 at Fox Point, where divers anchored a Christmas tree to the bottom and then decorated it. That dive is followed by the club's traditional New Year's dive at The Lodge.
Many underwater sites off the beautiful Ten Beaches have been captured on video by Sea Monkey Productions. For more information on local diving contact Torpedo Ray's (902) 481-0444 and view the Sea Monkey's video at www.seamonkeyproductions.com.
